Why Do We Root For Our “Home Team?”
Why We Root For Our “Home Team”
Speaking of crazy sports and the wearing of our team colors, I’ve often wondered why sports fan get so crazily devoted to their home clubs. The psychology of it is simple enough: People like to be a part of a mob, cheering on to victory, someone that represents them in a common goal, like winning a championship for their town. It makes people feel like they belong to something, gives their lives a sense of purpose, and if their home team’s a winner, they get to have the vicarious experience of major success that they may not be enjoying in their own jobs and life. “My job is a dead end and my city got washed away in a hurricane, but hey, my team won the Super Bowl. Yay! Life’s pretty good!”
The crazy thing is, most “hometown” teams are made mostly of guys not from your hometown. They come from all over, and the roster looks like a virtual wall map of the United States (or the entire world if you include Major League Baseball players from South America and Japan or NBA players from Spain and Yugoslavia.) Most have little or any allegiance to the city they represent…they just want the best contract and the most money, and if some team half-a-country away offers them a better deal, they’re off without so much as a thank you.
I remember the day in March of 1985 when the Baltimore Colts packed up the semi trucks and lit out for Indiana at 2 A.M. because owner Robert Irsay found a better deal in Indianapolis (a city that would actually build him a modern stadium, which Baltimore wouldn’t.) Fans all over Baltimore cried for weeks, but the fact is, the team they called the Baltimore Coltswas actually transplanted from Dallas, after stints in Miami, Brooklyn and Buffalo. Johnny Unitas, their storied quarterback, was actually from rival Pittsburgh.
After 12 years without a professional football franchise, the citizens of Baltimore were once again given the chance to be rabid NFL fans with their new team, the Ravens (and there much delayed new stadium.) Powered by a dominant defense, the Ravens won the Super Bowl in only their fourth year in the NFL, and their current roster, including fearless gunslinger Joe Flacco at quarterback, has perennial playoff prospects, rekindling Baltimore’s sports pride (unfortunately they can have none from their once-great and now awful Baltimore Orioles baseball team.)
So Baltimore roots for their new “hometown” boys like they all grew up on Eutaw Street or in Highlandtown, but less than 5% of the roster ever lived in Baltimore prior to being a Raven. Humans are a curious bunch; sports fans are even “curiouser.”

Me and my spouse have been pondering regarding this specific topic. Nevertheless the thruth is certainly, you actually can’t put your trust in details composed in the web.
Great job.
Some times its a pain in the ass to read what website owners wrote but this web site is really user friendly!
Grand blog post! Do you have any idea why your blog site got the recommendation from Christian Dillstrom? Mobile and social media marketing masterminds do not recommend something without a reason.
Quite interesting topic, it’s not some thing I hear a whole lot about”
I precisely desired to appreciate you yet again. I am not sure what I might have achieved without the information documented by you about that situation. It became a real difficult difficulty in my view, however , encountering the very specialised strategy you processed it took me to weep with fulfillment. I am happier for your guidance as well as hope you are aware of a great job your are getting into training the rest via your websites. I know that you haven’t met any of us.
Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S My apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
It looks like too complicated and very inclusive for me. I am expecting for your other post, and I will try to gain it! In fact the posting is spreading its wings rapidly, looking for it…
