2010 has been a topsy-turvy year for the NFL and so many of the NFL teams. Franchises who rightfully expected to be on top are in the toilet (Dallas Cowboys,) and teams considered perennial bottom-dwellers are holding court at the top of their division (Kansas City Chiefs?)
Tough enforcement of the already-exisiting “illegal hits” rule for reducing player head injuries is creating big conflict for big defenders on how they can still tackle aggressively; talks about a possible player lock-out for next season are already in full swing; and players that were supposed to be standout leaders for their teams have been benched (Washington Redskin’s quarterback Donovan McNabb) and shuffled off to their 3rd team within one season (wide receiver Randy Moss, now sporting a Tennessee Titans uniform.)
Low points include Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who swore he would never make a head-coach change in the middle of the season, then fired the hapless Wade Phillips exactly at the season’s middle point.
High points include the emergence of many great new stars, and the re-emergence of some old ones. Arguably the most exciting player in the NFL today is the Philadelphia Eagle’s quarterback Michael Vick, who took over early in the season for injured QB Kevin Kolb, and is putting on a dazzling show of both passing and running the ball. After being released from the NFL, filing for bankruptcy, and spending 21 months in prison for his part in a dog-fighting ring, Vick’s is truly one of the great resurrection stories in professional sports.
Yes, it’s definitely another crazy year for the National Football League. But hey, professional football is a crazy sport anyway, populated by some of the oddest, most egotistical characters on the planet (not withstanding the NBA and Los Angeles Lakers’ Ron Artest.) So throw on your team jersey (I’ve printed a link below for the best selection and prices on authentic NFL jerseys and football clothing,) gather your homies around your 65” flat-screen, bring on the ribs, nachos and beer, and bring on 8 more weeks of unwieldy match-ups and unpredictable results. One thing’s for sure, it’ll never be dull.
